: The urhobo development unity forum has called on president Muhammadu Buhari to appoint
an urhobo indegene as the substantial minister of petroleum, this was a
decision reached at an emergency meeting of it steering committee over the
weekend at Effurun.
The group also observed that the citing of the EPZ project in Ijaw and Itsekiri
enclaves is most beneficial to the two tribes whereas the urhobos who have the
highest deposit of natural gas is deliberately sidelined from the memorandum of
understanding is an act of injustice which the federal government has to as a
matter of urgency look into. Speaking further the coordinator of the group Hon Ese Sanco
decried the high level of marginalisation of the urhobo ethnic nationality from
issues related to oil and gas. He also lament the dearth of federal government
presence in urhobo land as companies like DSC, DELTA GLASS, SAPELE PORT,
OKWAGBE PORT and other government institutions are at the brink of
extinction. The group also called on President Muhamadu Buhari to as a matter
of urgency appoint an urhobo man as the petroleum minister in other to address
this injustice meted on the urhobo ethnic nationality.The group noted that since
the ministry was created no urhobo man has ever been appointed as petroleum
minister despite the fact that the Urhobos have 13 oil fields and 400 oil wells
while hosting one of the biggest gas plant in sub Saharan Africa. He called on
all sons and daughters of Urhobo origin to support and join forces with the
Urhobo Unity Forum in it’s fight to bring the urhobo nation back to their rightful
place in the socioeconomic and political development of the Nigerian state.
